I rarely post here, but this just made me so angry, I decided I needed to warn all the gay horror fans I could.
Dead Guys Cinema specializes in the making and selling of "guys in peril" films, an answer to all those endless women in peril movies.
To summaries their movies: low, low, production values, poor direction. incoherent scripts where gay guys wearing underwear, sometimes nude, are murdered, often in very (fake-looking) bloody ways, and the DVDs are *way* over-priced.
I own a couple of DGC films because I am very interested in and enjoy gay horror. As I said, I've bought a couple of their DVDs and watch some more through Netflix.
Now normally I would never buy one of their movies again. As I said, they are *way* over-priced, especially considering what you get for your money. But I had a good discount special through tlavideo (www.tlavideo.com) so among a number of film I bought, I also got Dead Guys Cinema's THE HANDYMAN.
When I buy a film I consider 1) the quality, 2) the running time, 3) the price, and 4) how much I want it. With THE HANDYMAN, I decided to buy it because I could get it for about $22 (it's regular price is $35(!)) and the production info said it was 120 minutes long.
So I watched it about 4 days ago now. And the next day I called tlavideo, asked for refund, explained why I wanted a refund, and they happy gave me a refund! I eagerly sent the DVD *back* to them on Saturday the 1st.
My reason: "THE HANDYMAN" MOVIE IS ACTUALLY **44 MINUTES** LONG! It is NOT 120 minutes; it is no where near 2 hours. It isn't even 45 minutes long!
(By the way, there is NO running time information on the DVD cover itself.)
I am fairly certain what DGC did. The included the running time of the disc's Extras - including over 20 minutes of extended death scenes, oh joy! and previews of their other films, which were not previews but just long, boring 4-5 minute scenes from more of their films.
This is a cheat; this is a lie; this is NOT right.
The running time of film on a DVD is the running time of *the film* itself. The Extras are NOT counted as part of the running time! And DGC counted the Extras as part of the running time. Wrong, cheaters!
I've been contacting the online sites that sell THE HANDYMAN and telling them of the actual running time of 44 minutes. After a day or two of that, I emailed Dead Guys Cinema (which had the 2 hours running time for THE HANDYMAN at their site) and told them what I was doing and why. I'm posting here now and I'll be posting elsewhere as well.
I have a long history of being a big fan of gay-related Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror. I've been involved in organizing it as well and getting it further introduced into general fandom. I care about the field.
So when some stupid bastards try to pull as big a rip-off as THE HANDYMAN, I get seriously pissed. And I do something about it.
